Here's what to expect at each stage of the season, so you can choose the departure that matches the adventure you're after.
Early Season: Waterfalls at Their Wildest (March to May)
If there's one reason to cruise early in the season, it's water. The wet season, which builds through the summer months, leaves the Kimberley's rivers swollen and its waterfalls running at full force. Cruising in March, April and May means arriving just as the country is still recovering from the monsoon, with King George Falls, King Cascade and Mitchell Falls all thundering down their sandstone escarpments at their most dramatic.
This is also when the landscape is at its greenest. Gorges that turn dusty red later in the year are still flushed with fresh growth, rivers run high, and the whole coastline feels newly awakened. Expect warmer, more humid conditions during this window, with the occasional late-season shower still possible. It's a small trade-off for scenery that simply isn't there later in the year.
Mid-Season: The Sweet Spot for Exploring (June to August)
By the middle of the year, the Kimberley settles into its classic dry-season rhythm: clear blue skies, cooler mornings and evenings, and glassy conditions across the bays and inlets that make tender excursions and rock art visits especially comfortable. This is peak cruising season, and for good reason.
June through August is also when the region's most spectacular wildlife event unfolds. Humpback whales begin arriving in the waters off the Kimberley coast in June, with calving typically taking place through July and August before the pod's return journey to Antarctic waters. Camden Sound, now protected as one of Western Australia's marine parks, is the epicentre of this migration and is home to the largest population of humpbacks in the world. Spotting a mother and calf breaching against the backdrop of the Kimberley's red cliffs is one of those moments that stays with you long after the cruise ends.
Cooler temperatures during this period also make for particularly enjoyable days ashore, whether you're hiking to a hidden waterhole, exploring ancient Gwion Gwion and Wandjina rock art galleries, or heading out with a rod in hand.
Late Season: Calm Seas and Prime Fishing (September to October)
As the dry season deepens toward its end, the Kimberley coast settles into some of its calmest and most predictable conditions of the year. Waterfalls have eased from their wet-season peak, but what you gain instead is glassy water, excellent visibility, and some of the best fishing conditions of the entire cruising calendar.
Barramundi, mangrove jack and mud crab are all in good form through September and October, and the Kimberley's tidal creeks and river systems are especially rewarding for anglers during this stretch. It's also a wonderful time to witness Montgomery Reef in full flow, as the reef appears to rise from the sea with the outgoing tide, or to take a scenic helicopter flight over the Mitchell Plateau while the skies are at their clearest.
Temperatures build steadily as the season progresses, so those wanting the coolest conditions onboard tend to favour the earlier part of this window.
