King George Falls
- Waterfall
One of the most spectacular gorges in Australia, rimmed by dizzying cliffs, terminates in twin 80 metre high waterfalls. Arguably, the ultimate anchorage! Enjoy a refreshing shower on the bow, marvel at the cappuchino foam, swim in a fault-line crevice or fish for barra below East Arm Falls.
King George Falls rank among the tallest twin waterfalls in Western Australia, and the gorge that frames them is unlike anywhere else in the Kimberley. Ancient sandstone cliffs rise hundreds of metres on either side, carved over millions of years into a dramatic canyon that opens directly to the sea — accessible only by boat, which makes arriving by Kimberley cruise all the more special.
The falls are at their most powerful in the wet season aftermath, when freshwater cascades thunder down the cliff face into the tidal waters below, creating the signature cappuccino-coloured foam that fills the anchorage. It's a setting that rewards those who simply sit with it — whether from the bow of the vessel, from the water itself, or from above on a helicopter flight.
Below East Arm Falls, the fishing is exceptional. Barramundi hold in the deeper pools where freshwater meets salt, making this one of the more memorable fishing spots on any Kimberley expedition. For the swimmers, fault-line crevices in the gorge walls create natural rock pools that are as geological as they are refreshing.
King George Falls is a destination that defines what a Kimberley cruise can deliver — remote, dramatic, and entirely beyond what most people imagine Australia to look like.
